An Important Dialogue Among Former Military Leaders Who Took Part in the Lebanese Civil War

20 June 2025

On June 20, 2025, Fighters for Peace organized a dialogue event entitled “On the Path of Remembrance: Toward a Peaceful Future that Unites the Lebanese.” The event brought together a large audience of civil society representatives, researchers, historians, and activists working in the fields of social cohesion and peacebuilding, as well as representatives of the German Embassy in Lebanon.

Participants listened to the personal testimonies of former military leaders who had been involved in the Lebanese Civil War: Mr. Sami Khoury (Lebanese Kataeb Party), Mr. Charles Ghastine (National Liberal Party and Lebanese Forces), Mr. Samir Alwan (Progressive Socialist Party), Mr. Mohammad Awada (Lebanese Communist Party), and Mr. Hisham Al-Debsi (Palestine Liberation Organization).

The speakers shared their personal experiences of the war and reflected on their vision for the future of civil peace in Lebanon, emphasizing that violence can never be a solution to our conflicts.

This was followed by remarks from the Deputy Head of Mission of Germany in Lebanon, who highlighted the importance of engaging with the past as a means of fostering reconciliation and strengthening social cohesion.

The event also marked the official launch of the Memory Bus Project, implemented by Fighters for Peace.

The gathering concluded with an open discussion with the audience, during which participants stressed the importance of establishing a National Commission for Reconciliation and Social Cohesion.
